Halloween 2012

Doesn't Tinkerbell always help Captain Hook with his mustache?

A scary pirate is he.

Despite the recent disaster, the neighborhood really rallied and the evening was lovely.

We ran into Brooke and Abby Cadabby (Phoenyx).  Tinkerbell and Abby bonded over both having green wings.  Well, tinkerbell thought it was cool, Abby was a little confused.

It's hard to carry your candy and eat it too when you have a hook for a hand.

Things are not yet back to any kind of normal yet here, but we're all doing our best.  It's been hard as the extent of the damage in the city becomes clear.  Turns out I have a lot of friends and colleagues that have been very badly hit.  The worst being one friend at work whoes family lost their beach home in Breezy Point, her sister's house in Belle Harbor, and her parents house in Belle Harbor may not be salvageable at all.  There's some survivor guilt setting in.

How to Survive a Hurricane

Carve your pumpkins!

Sew.

The dogs other side.

And not pictures- make rice-crispie treats, muffins, and chocolate chip cookies.  Play chess, checkers, read books, write books about hurricanes, write about hurricanes on the easel, lean out the window into the wind and rain, call your family a lot, drink beer and gin, eat, eat, eat and eat.

Hurricane Damage

Here are the photos we took on a short walk around our neighborhood.  The Cemetery looks badly hit as far as the trees go- sad.  We don't know when it will be easy to get around, but we're fine for a while.  The first pic is just to show a little tree that survived.  It made us happy.

Fun At The Aquarium

A beautiful day here deserved a fun trip.  We headed to Coney Island.
The aquarium is always fun, this urchin agrees.

As do these pirates.

And this walrus.

Feeding

To get out of the house we took a trip to the Staten Island Zoo.  It is a very sweet little zoo with a lovely petting area.  Sorry the second picture is blurry- you can see how happy Simon is though.

Recovery

A quick update on Simon's recovery.

When it is good- it is very good.  When it's not...   sigh.

Simon is mostly doing quite well, he's trying to keep his spirits up which can be hard when you really don't want to swallow.  The first few days weren't so bad, but last night and today were harder- we were warned it can be like that.  He's eating a little food sometimes but mostly is still on popsicles, jello, ice cream, and such.  Simon's supposed to be drinking tons, but he has mastered the 'take as little into his mouth as possible and try to never swallow it' technique of drinking.

This will all pass and he will be fine, but it's tiring for all of us.

Tonsils Day

On the way at 6am, wearing a balloon hat from a restaurant last night.

Trying to pass the time waiting for the surgery.

After a dose of something that got Simon somewhat drunk, our highly respected ENT put a giggling Simon over his shoulder and took him into surgery.

Eating Jello in the afternoon.  "Getting my tonsils tooken out wasn't as worse I thought." His grammar is failing him today, but he was still trying to look on the bright side.

How We Process Information

Simon is feeling very worried about his upcoming surgery.
He is doing a GREAT job keeping it all together.
Last night he did a lot of processing by writing things on his easel.  First he drew pictures of what made him feel good and bad about the whole thing, sadly he erased the picture that titled, "Mixed Feelings" before we could take a photo.  It had pictures of Gatorade (good!) and hospital beds (bad) among other things.  This one is a list of the events as he understands them.  Number 4 says, "get medicine     do a circus."   That is because we told him he will get medicine that makes him feel very silly.
Notice the heart around number 13.
